We are a husband and wife team based in Alberta, Canada and we're intent on exploring the world around us and enjoying everything life had to offer. Sometimes that means hiking and camping, other times it means going on road trips, and we'll never pass up the chance to check out old grain elevators, historic sites, and museums of all sizes. We're suckers for nostalgia, quirky roadside attractions, retro architecture, and Dan never passes up a chance to log another Geocache.
We operate on a shoestring budget and our RUclips channel is a side project as we both work full time jobs which occupy the majority of our time. If you want high production value, you won't find it here. We're just a couple of regular folks armed with a camera, a sense of adventure, and a love of life and spending time together. We're real, we're unscripted, and we hope you'll come along with us on the journey.

Last Stand of Creston’s Historic Grain Elevator + The Grave of the Craigellachie Kid
We got word through the online community that another grain elevator was getting set to be demolished. Yes, the 1930s former U.G.G. (United Grain Growers) elevator in the town of Creston, British Columbia was in the early stages of "deconstruction".
Apparently it has some structural issues and there simply aren't enough funds available to do a restoration. It's a story we see all too often.
So, what does any insane grain elevator fan do? We took advantage of our first available day off from work and set out with DroneOCan to go visit the elevator, pay our respects, and capture it on video for future generations. After all, it's just a simple 500km drive to get to Creston from our house, a m...

Documenting the present so the future will have a past... Eau Claire Market opened in August of 1993 to much fanfare and it did very well for the first few years of its existence. Once heralded as the catalyst for downtown revitalization, today it is home to only a few remaining businesses. The market is closing at the end of May 2024 and then demolition is expected to begin in July. Formerly t...

We just marked the unofficial start of summer in Canada with the Victoria Day Long Weekend a.k.a "May Long". Emily and I loaded up Bella the Boler, our 1978 camper, and headed out to the beautiful Peter Lougheed Provincial Park for four nights of camping at Boulton Creek Campground. The weather wasn't the greatest as we encountered rain, snow, and wind but we still had a great experience. Geoca...

How often do you get to see a steam locomotive from the 1930s out running on the railway main line? Not often enough! We took the opportunity to leave Calgary early on a Saturday morning and catch CPKC's "The Empress" outside of Dunmore, Alberta and follow it to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. It was a great day with many people out enjoying the experience. The CKPC "Final Spike Steam Tour" is off to ...

DRONE CRASH: DroneOCan Goes Down Along a Former Railway Right-of-Way While Geocaching

Love your new hat. :-) When we took our daughters there about 15 years ago, I bought a book at a gift shop on the first day. It's title: Death In Yellowstone. Why did I think that would be a good idea? I spent the next 10 days seeing lethal situations every where we turned. Death by scalding. Death by bison stampede. Death by falling off a bridge. Death by having a rock fall on your head.
Thanks for this informative video.
Respectfully dismantled not ruthlessly destroyed! It's good to be nice to our condemned grain elevators 😊
This was a very interesting video. It's nice to see people actually following the drone rules to help avoid giving all drone pilots a bad rep. Your footage turned out great and it was nice to see the old UGG elevator from all those different angles as I likely won't be able to sneak out there for some of my own before this old sentinel is gone. Nice that you were able to tie in some other interesting info during your visit as well. Keep up the good work Dan O!
Thank you. I try and keep within the rules as my as possible
Excellent layman's explanation of a grain elevator. There's also a wonderful 1960's NFB doc., about a day in the life of a grain elevator operator.
Yes, filmed at Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan. We didn't get there before it was demolished a few years ago.
Great work, Dan... Also, Emily, you're AWESOME!
She certainly is.
Another really fantastic and informative video! I've never been to Canada, so all Canadian history is new to me. That kid is a legend!!
too bad that more can't be saved. Thanks Dan. Glad you made it
Me too!
Very interesting. Who would have know that young man snuck his way into that famous photo. Great vid as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it. Greatly appreciated.😊
Oh no, that place again! I had basic there in the winter of 1974 and we were 'required' to both visit and donate to the Patton Museum. I guess the $1 I kicked in didn't do much. You're right, it does get cold there, especially when you're outside all the time. This is the first time I've seen the place since back then. When I was there Knox was home to a basic training command (TRADOC) as well as the US Army Armor School. We got to hear tanks and explosions all the time. We stayed in the old WWII barracks during our in-processing week, so I got to stay in one exactly like this. We then moved over to the brick/concrete barracks down the road. Also, they filmed most of the movie Stripes right here on Knox, in the training area. I got my first Army haircut at the same barber the actors did. If you like the actual weapons try to visit Aberdeen Proving Grounds Museum in Aberdeen, MD.
This was absolutely an awesome video! Thank you for sharing ! Have always been mesmerized by this elevator. 👍👏
Do you know the story of the rail bridge you guys ran across?
As an old Infantryman... Always keep your wife out in front of you when hiking thru the woodlands. Must be a gentleman at all times.
Gotta love ❤🤍💙 the double decker shitter 💩💩💩💩💩🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣! #Montana
You finished the day I retired. I first drove 66 back in January 1976. Hard to believe we did that almost 50 years ago. Life goes on. People always ask me what my favorite part of the trip was, what location was the best. For me it's that area west of Amarillo until Flagstaff, Arizona. Just had the right mix and great topography and interesting local color. Maybe you guys will have another chance to drive it, because I have a hunch in the near future the Route will be slowly disappearing. It's changed so much since 1976 that you could write a compare and contrast book between then and now. Even Tom Teague's book, from the early 90s, was sort of like that, but even that was over 30 years ago. I think nearly everyone he featured in that book is long gone today, even Tom passed away back in the mid-90s. Good luck with your future travels out there.
Thank you so much for the comment and the insight. We have talked about doing the route in 2026 for the 100th anniversary but we're not sure we want to. With limited time and money, repeating the trip after just st eight years doesn't seem like the wisest thing; there are so many places to see. I always tell people that there will never be more Route 66 to see than there is today. For every successful preservation effort like the Painted Desert Trading Post, there are six more that have been lost.
VERY NICE
Thanks.
OLD IS GOLD THANKS SIR L F mauritius
It certainly is!
I had no idea there was a second Virginia City. I only know the one in Nevada.
Just like I find it interesting there is Nevada City in Montana. I wonder if Nevada had a Montana City.
@@DanOCan lol
The mall lacked big name attraction, sure it had a movie theater.
True. With movie theatres all over the city, it wasn't enough to keep people coming back repeatedly.
Wow. How does that work?
Apparently, there are baffles inside which route the waste from the upper seats down into the pit in the ground, safely routing it around anyone using the bottom section.
How cool is that! Once I saw it I wanted one here at home! 🤭
Convenience at its finest.
My first concert in this bulding was KISS in 1977 and still have pictures I took
Cool. I'm going to miss the old place, especially the giant cowboy sign outside.
Did you ever find out exactly what the purpose of these were put in some areas around the city? Ive asked transit drivers this question over many years and they dont know and ive lived here all my life.
Their only purpose is to prevent drivers from using the route as a shortcut. That's why so many of them are located between communities. It's to force the cars off the more residential streets and onto the larger feeder roads.
I'm from Saskatchewan now in AB. I love looking around these cool places.
Saskatchewan is the best, with Manitoba being right up there with it. Alberta has some but I think our higher population as really brought about the demise of these small//ghost towns and abandoned homesteads.
OH, MY! How cool is that. Great tour, and Great Railroad stuff. You know, I, too, am a "Railroad NUT"! Those cars were really great. Thanks for the peek at them. Can't wait for the next episode. 😮
That place just blow us away. :)
i have postcards from 1959 when my folks were honeymooning through that area. we went there in 1975. the candy store in one of the towns had an all summer sucker on display
Very cool. It's a great spot. Just this morning we were just saying how we wish we could afford to take two months off and just drive around Montana.
I sure loved this area when I visited years ago......Thanks for sharing Dan.....
I'd love to go back when we have more time. We barely scratched the surface and there are so many other ghost towns I want to see.
Is it in the danocan list to find those old wagon wheel ruts on the Alberta Prairie? (McCloud Trail. Min 7:25)
It hasn't been on my radar since moving my primary focus from the blog to RUclips. It certainly would be worth another visit, especially now with drone technology to be able to fly over the prairie and see the evidence from above. I did a little photo essay on a portion of the trail back in 2015: danocan.com/2015/04/04/following-the-old-macleod-trail/
I also created a GPX file of the various locations where the Macleod Trail markers are located. Not sure if this link will work, but try it here: 1drv.ms/u/s!Av4IEQfAGdA8gskEoWcD4zZObbQzkQ
It is always sad to see a home from the past in disrepair. Thank you for the tour, I love our old west history.
Yes, so many stories wrapped up in those old homes. Happy times, sad times, hard times. Births, deaths, these places have seen it all. At least there are some tangible reminders of the past still around, but fewer every year.
An unexpected look at America. It is amazing. How unusual this village looks. Steinbeck and Dreiser immediately come to mind.
Such a different era. It really was like stepping back in time.
Exactly where would you PUT more parking at Multnomah Falls? Fill in more of the river?
It certainly is pretty geographically limited, isn't it?
Hi ya, my wife, Kathie, said, "if you want to save your parking space in front of your house , put your refuse can out there to assure your space." Isn't she helpful? Lol And that's after 56 years of marriage... Glad you're enjoying Yellowstone. It's been years since we've been. Cheers, from Oregon!
Yep, that's what I need to do from now on. I'd love to get back to Oregon again -- it's been too long. Out of all the places I have traveled, it is the one place that feel like home when I am there -- at least the coastal region.
@DanOCan well, C'MON! 😁 Bring Emily too.
When that grain elevator was built most likely wagons would dump their grain there.
Absolutely.
Very informative. Thanks!
Thank you!
it always amazes me how mother nature regenerates after a massive fire like the '88 fire in Yellowstone. here's a neat fact before 1988 the US national park policy was if nature set the fire it was to be left to burn itself out. of course the '88 fire changed that. but it looks like they may have to do some prescribed burning in the park.
Yeah, fire doesn't always leave the nicest things in its immediate wake, but it is nature's cleaner and an important part of the forest life cycle. Sure glad the Old Faithful Inn survived.
I'm going on an AK cruise later this year too. :o)
Which line are you cruising with?
@@DanOCan Holland America
And you?
old faithful. that hasn't been since the summer of 1959.
Nice. Yellowstone really does feel like a step back to the golden age of post-war travel.
Excellent tour guide. Nice hat.
Thanks!
Thanks as ever for your video, Dan & Emily! I wish I had a dollar for every May Long Weekend I've spent dealing with snow at a campsite.
No doubt. It's tradition!
Thanks for the video, Dan and Emily! I always enjoy your approach to touring western North America.
We travel well together. Just wish we had more time to do it.

Thank you!
I can't believe it gonna happened to the mall. It's so sad to see
I would have liked to see some parts of the mall integrated into the new LRT station. We lost so much history of the site with the removal of the old bus barns.
Crazy coincidence! We'll be setting up our Casita at Indian Creek tomorrow. Planned our trip 6 months ago. Might cross paths in Yellowstone!
We're already back -- videos are a little behind in posting but have a great trip!
Last time we were in Montana was 33 years ago.
That's a long stretch. Yellowstone was twenty years between visits for me but Montana is a fairly frequent destination lately.
Thanks for this. Was long time wondering.
Glad to help!
We were there in 2010 and after watching your video revisited my photos and video I took to compare to with yours. Interesting to compare 2002, 2010 & 2018. Mines were completely closed off in 2010. Hope to visit it again this year.(2024)
My previous visit was 2002 or 2003. My old video from that trip probably still exists on an old DV tape somewhere.
Bella followed you all the way! 😂lol
Couldn’t shake her, haha
Yep!
Ohhh now I want Lobster Bisque and to stop at 3 Points MT!!!! We camped at the Colter Bay Campground back in 2019, and we paid $80/nite😮!!! Then drove to Old Faithful early in the morning. We were such newbies😂, we roll in, no reserveration, but they squeezed us in bcuz we were so small(12ft trailer), among class As, and going early to Old Fathful, we had breakfast there, it was 5 star for $10/US!!! Spoiler alerthe washrooms were amazing...
The camping prices are insane. Our first two nights were $85, third night was $90, and the fourth was $100.
THINGS CHANGE.
Indeed they do.
@@DanOCan ruclips.net/video/3gtUNhdJMVo/видео.html&ab_channel=SpookyTooth-Topic yep
One thing's for certain. The colour scheme in that mall SCREAMED 1990's...All that teal and purple? Very, very much 1990's.
Oh yeah, no doubt about that.
Awesome video Dan! Keep up the great work :)
Thank you so much!
